Chinese Academy of Sciences sets up vertical climate observation system in Motuo

Recently, Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) completed the installation of 6 sets of automatic meteorological stations in Motuo. It has established a vertical climate observation system spanning an altitude of 3400 meters (from 800m to 4300m) with an average altitude interval of about 300m, which has paved the way for studying the change rule of hydro-thermal environmental factors in eastern sections of the Himalayas with the changing water vapor channel and altitudinal gradient, as well as clearing up the emergence processes and mechanism of climate, ecology, hydrology, glacier, and geological hazards in eastern Himalayas under the influence of Indian monsoon.

Motuo and neighboring regions possess the most complete vertical natural belt spectrum in China. Due to frequent geological hazards and inconvenient transportation, this region lacks a complete coastal altitudinal gradient climate observation system, which markedly handicaps the profound research into major frontier scientific topics like atmosphere, hydrology, biodiversity, ecological process, disastrous process and glacier change.

The Institute has coordinated the current 7 meteorological observation stations, and carried out intensive observation on the added 6 sets of automatic meteorological stations at different altitudinal gradients. Right now, it has formed vertical climate observation system composed of 13 sets of meteorological stations. (Oct. 31)
